Wheatland Mall smelled like breakfast early Saturday morning.

That's because they were serving up pancakes in celebration of Co-op Week 2022, with all the proceeds going to the Swift Current branch of the Salvation Army.

After not being able to host any events for the last couple of years, members of Pioneer Co-op were excited to be back at the griddle, flipping flap jacks for hungry kids, parents, couples and individuals.

One of those happy pancake peddlers was Pioneer Co-op Board of Directors member, Mac Forster.

"It's usually well attended," said Forster. "It's just a great time to come out and meet some of the people here."

One of the people folks got to introduce themselves to was Renee Mailman, Leftenant for the Swift Current Branch Salvation Army.

She was greeting and enjoying the pancake breakfast with everyone else, and getting to know the community. Since the Salvation Army opened its doors in the city during the pandemic, it's been slow getting to know Swift Current's citizenry.

"We had no idea about regular events [in Swift Current] and all of a sudden we're being told that there's a pancake breakfast that the proceeds go to us," rejoiced Mailman. "We're just like 'wow, that's amazing, that's wonderful and it's so good to be able to see people come together again after the pandemic, and just being able to live in a community."

Attendees were able to dress their pancakes in whipped cream, strawberries, and maple syrup. There was also a selection of juice, coffee, and water being handed out by a member of the Swift Current Broncos.

The money raised by the event will be presented to the Salvation Army at a later date and time.
