Keeping up with information may leave you in the dust according to SGI, as we enter a new month and a new traffic safety spotlight.

Putting a focus on distracted driving, SGI is hoping to 'reform distracted drivers' during March.

SGI's Manager of Media Relations Tyler McMurchy said they’re spreading information about the dangerous habit and the adverse effects it can have on you.

"This month around, we are highlighting and reminding people about significant consequences for repeat offenders. Specifically, we are reminding people, if you get two cell-phone tickets within one year's time, you will have your vehicle impounded at roadside immediately on getting that second for one week."

The week-long suspension was issued to 87 people in Saskatchewan last year after they were given a second $240 cellphone ticket, according to SGI.

As for what could land you with a distracted driving ticket, McMurchy explains.

"One law is very specific to handheld electronic devices. It says you are not allowed to hold, use, manipulate, or view a handheld electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. The other distracted driving law is driving without due care and reasonable consideration."

As part of the spotlight, SGI has created a series of videos outlining the story of one woman who received a seven-day suspension due to the law.

SGI recommends to cut out the use of phones when driving, to put the device in a glove box, purse, or trunk, use do not disturb mode, or use voice-activated functions to change songs or to get directions.
