It was announced in late-August, that Swift Current would be home to a Shakespeare Festival and recently more details have emerged.

The Great South West Shakespeare Festival will host its first ever show on the night of July 26 in Riverside Park.

The festival is expected to be alike the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival in Saskatoon, both of which Gordon McCall, the artistic director for the Lyric Theatre, has created.

"Bringing a similar type festival because I think we have a great opportunity to make Shakespeare ours in our region, that's why we're calling it The Great South West Shakespeare Festival," McCall said. "We're thrilled to present this. It will be a big community event accessible to all... everyone will get to have a taste of the bard."

Six performances are scheduled per week with the festival running from July 26 until August 17.

"There will be a couple matinees, but primarily evening performances, beautiful summer evenings," he said. "We're running a final week in conjunction with the Western Canada Summer Games as part of the cultural activities, we think it's going to be a great marriage of those two events."

The play selected is A Midsummer Night's Dream, which could see lots of local talent on display as McCall said they will have auditions in Swift Current.
