A dream several months ago by a Shaunavon fisherman became reality during the Sask Landing Walleye Tournament this past weekend.

Tyson Willman, who had the dream, claimed first place in the 30th annual fishing tournament with partner Cole English.

English reeled in his 9-pound 10-ounce catch on Sunday while Willman brought in his 7-pound 8-ounce fish on Saturday. Both of them caught their prized fish mere minutes before having to commute back to weigh-ins each day.

"We literally stopped at one last spot to give our fish a revival in the live well," English recalled. "Throw a line over, had five minutes to go and we hooked into both big fish in the same spot."

The duo won first place in the tournament, their first tournament win ever, and they also won the 'tournament within the tournament' netting them $18,500 in total, which they split down the middle.

"I'd like for it to go back into fishing but my wife and I are going through fertility treatment," English said.

English had been competing in the Sask Landing tournament since 2016 and is still in disbelief he and Willman came away with the victory.

"The past two years, my partner and I have lost some good fish at the edge of the boat in the tournament so it was nice to finally be able to land a couple when it mattered," he said.
