A crew of six doggone awesome residents help to run the local animal shelter, which was recognized at this year’s Business Excellence Awards.

The Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce handed the 2022 Not-For-Profit Award to the Swift Current Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), a well-deserved honour.

Sara Filion, manager of the SPCA, said they were a bit surprised to hear their name called on the stage.

“It was very exciting,” she said. “A little unexpected because we were up against some pretty awesome other not-for-profits.”

Formed in 1971, the SPCA started out as a shelter-less society and has come a long way since; now with foster homes, board members, multiple kennels at the physical location, and a crew of six hard-working individuals running the show.

“It’s really incredible and it means so much that the community is thinking of us and nominating us,” Filion said. “We love our community so much and they always go above and beyond for us.”

While the shelter doesn’t have an exact spot in mind to display the award, Filion said they’re looking for a spot high enough out of reach of the shelter cats—who will do anything in their power to knock shiny things over.
