Two years ago 54 people were killed on Saskatchewan's highways due to drinking and driving.

Nearly a year after those statistics were released, the students of Swift Current Comprehensive High School continue their fight against drunk drivers.

Swift Current Comp's SADD chapter with help from the RCMP took to the streets Wednesday afternoon reminding drivers not to drink and drive by handing out red ribbons on Central Avenue.

"The students love the connection they have with the RCMP," SADD Advisor Sarah McDonald said. "The RCMP are the ones on the front line going out and stopping impaired drivers. They're aware because they go to the crashes. So when we partner up with the RCMP for check stops, it just gives the students a different perspective."

This was the first check stop performed by the high school's SADD group this year and it coincides with Provincial Impaired Driving Awareness Week.

"I think for myself I've noticed in the news, that there doesn't seem to be as many impaired driving stories as there was this time last year," McDonald added.

The group of approximately 15 students have remained busy, as earlier this week on Tuesday the school had a public speaker and Thursday they had funeral flowers representing all 54 people killed in Saskatchewan due to drinking and driving.

They're planning on driving around the city on the weekend and rewarding motorists who chose a safe ride home.
