After losing out on their indoor Box Lacrosse season due to the COVID-19 shutdown, the Swift Current Lacrosse Association (SCLA) is happy to be back on the field.

Trenton Froese is with the SCLA and the President of the South Sask Lacrosse League (SSLL).  He says that it's been nice to get the players outdoors again.

"It gets a stick back in our hand.  Gets us outside and enjoying the weather and getting active again.  And it's just good to see teammates and coaches and staff.  It's been great."

With league play still on hold, he says that the games have been friendlies between the various age groups in Swift Current, with twice a week sessions taking place at Riverside field; Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"We basically have two teams in each division.  We combined the 15 to 18 division and the 11 to 13 divisions and we've got two teams in each, so they're essentially playing each other every Thursday."

Field Lacrosse is still relatively new to Swift Current, but it, as well as Lacrosse in general, has been steadily growing in popularity since the Saskatchewan Rush moved to the province from Edmonton.  Froese called the move a "massive boon" for the sport in the province.  He has nothing but praise for the Rush organization and its commitment to engaging with smaller local community lacrosse organizations to build the sport.

"Almost every year we've had kids at games and they get to go down the floor before the game and meet some of the players after the game and get some autographs and stuff like that.  They do a really good job of working with the minor programs here in the province."

While being Canada's national game, Lacrosse for kids has yet quite reached the level of popularity of prairie mainstays like hockey and baseball or even soccer.  But for Froese, the more sports kids have access to, the better, and he's a big proponent of kids trying every sport, especially younger players.

"Let's get kids active.  And let's get kids in that kind of team atmosphere where they learn to hold each other accountable and build some great friendships."
