People driving by the Lt. Colonel Clifton Recreation Centre on 6th Ave North East from last week into this week might have seen work being done on the tank out front.

The tank, now dubbed 'Dora,' has since become armed with a fresh coat of paint, resembling its original colour, and a couple decals to complete its refurbishment.

Andy Keys is with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 in Swift Current and said they noticed, along with Laird Clifton (son of Iver Clifton from the 14th Hussars, whom the centre is named after) that the tank needed work.

"We noticed it was in dire need of refurbishment. We went to the City with the Legion and asked if there's any money in the budget, and the City said they'd do what they could do," said Keys, while the refurbishment was going on. "I inquired a little bit later on this year, and they gave us the go ahead. So we've got a few volunteers come down and pressure washed it, grinding wheels to get all the old flaky paint off and the rust, we red-oxide primed the whole thing."

Keys said they were toying with a few names for the tank, but ultimately settled on 'Dora.' Apart from the old paint wearing down, he also said the former shade of green wasn't true to the armed vehicle's original coat.

Keys had a number of volunteers helping out as painting was completed late last week and decals were slapped on early this week.

The Centre was once the Swift Current Armories, but in 2012 became the Lt. Colonel Clifton Recreation Centre.

Keys said he's putting photos of the original tanks that were in Swift Current on display at the Centre.
