Mother Nature will not be too kind for the opening days of the Western Canada Summer Games.

Natalie Hassel, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it would be nothing but a risk of showers, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies for the first days of the games.

"We have a number of systems stringing through southern Saskatchewan and will affect the Swift Current area," she said. "Anyone who is going out to the games or just out should be ready for a chance of showers, risk of a thunderstorm today, tonight, tomorrow and we also have cloudy skies continuing through to Tuesday including Tuesday during which there might be rain or showers and probably thunderstorms as well."

Hassel said that temperature-wise things would be cooling down.

"Temperatures will reach a high of 27, so just around seasonal then we will see the temperatures get quite cool, well below normal sitting around 19," she noted. "We should see improvement for a short stint in the middle of the week next week after Tuesday. We should be clearing up for a few days, but unfortunately, the models do suggest that another system does come through at about the end of the Western Canada Summer Games."

She said that in terms of how much, will be hitting the southwest, it would all depend on if thunderstorms make their way into the area.

"The showers shouldn't be too substantial but if you do end up being under a thunderstorm, even none severe thunderstorms can dump quite a bit of rain in a short period of time. A typical amount for a thunderstorm is 10, 15, 20 mills. If we were talking severe thunderstorms, we'd be talking about 50 mills in an hour or less," Hassel said. "Right now, we are not expecting very much in the sense of severe thunderstorms, but even regular thunderstorms can give you a pretty good dousing."
