A large collection of Swift Current organizations will be getting a slice of nearly $115,000.

The funding comes from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program and last week Swift Current city council backed a recommendation made by the Recreation and Parks Board to dole out the funding to 60 extracurricular activities and organizations in the Swift Current area.

Nicole Spenst, the recreation/scheduling superintendent for the City of Swift Current, said the money the City received from Saskatchewan Lotteries had to be divided to meet certain criteria.

"The community grant program consists of two components, a target component which must receive at least 30 per cent of the total funding and a base component which is eligible for the remainder of the funding," she explained to council. "Target populations include groups such as indigenous people, seniors, women, youth at risk, the economically disadvantaged, identifiable minorities, persons with a disability, and single-parent families."

Just over 83 per cent of the funds or $95,850 will be going towards targeted components, while the remaining $19,050 or about 17 per cent will be spent on base funding.

The City of Swift Current's Parks Play program will receive the largest slice of the pie, getting almost $26,500. The only organization to be turned away in their application was the Swift Current Wolverines Lacrosse Club and the reasoning they weren't approved for funding was because they're a club team.
