This month, motorists in southwestern Saskatchewan and the rest of the province can expect to see an increase in law enforcement around intersections.

Law enforcement all over Saskatchewan will be keeping a more direct watch on intersections and the corresponding violations that happen around them.

Any point of interception between juxtaposed lanes of traffic is a dangerous one with intersections the most common point of collision for vehicles in motion.

SGI Manager of Media Relations Tyler McCurchy works closely with RCMP and police on these initiatives.

"People may not think about it all the time, but whenever you drive, you're passing through likely dozens of intersections, and we want people to think about what to do when they come to those intersections," McMurchy said. "Drivers need to understand that when they are approaching an intersection, their chance of a collision is increased."

There are some key things to keep in mind when stopped at or approaching an intersection.

"Just keeping in mind what your obligations are when you approach intersections," reminds McMurchy. "In winter months, it's definitely something that drivers need to have a little bit of an additional focus on because you're going to be dealing with more slippery conditions with less traction."

Although the majority of motorists know to remain lucid to their surroundings, it's important to keep the thought active.

"That's where you see an increased chance that you might be in a collision with another vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist," said McMurchy. "Drivers need to be cognizant of traffic signals and other things."

Just a couple of months ago in November was the last time SGI focused in on intersection safety, the total rang in at 709 intersection violations, which included; 270 drivers who disobeyed stop signs, 196 drivers who failed to obey the lights, 82 drivers who made illegal U-turns at the lights, and 161 other intersection related traffic safety violations.
