A poorly timed slump has put the Swift Current Broncos in a battle for the playoffs.

They fell 9-1 in Brandon on Saturday night extending their losing streak to six games and allowing Moose Jaw to climb within two points of the Broncos for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the WHL East Division.

The once twelve point lead has dwindled as the teams have been heading over opposite directions over the last two weeks.

They've been outscored 31-9 over the losing streak.

Swift Current started strong on Saturday night as Jay Merkley scored their lone goal to keep it tied at 1 through the first period.

Bounces and turnovers started to pile up against them in the second period as the Wheat King pulled ahead 4-1. They extended their lead as the Broncos seemed to run out of gas in a frustrating third period.

Morgan Klimchuk led the way for Brandon with four points, while Eric Roy, Peter Qunneville and Tim McGauley had three point nights for the Wheat Kings. They won the season series with the Broncos 6-2.

Brandon went 4/5 on the power play as Swift Current's usually strong penalty kill allowed nine goals on thirteen opportunities over their last three games.

Moose Jaw beat Saskatoon 7-1 on Saturday to further close the gap. Both teams have six games left on their schedule starting with the Warriors visitng Brandon on Tuesday and the Broncos hosting Regina on Wednesday.

Swift Current was still without Coach/GM Mark Lamb for Saturday's game. The Broncos said he was released from hospital on Saturday and would be rejoining the team this week.
