A Hodgeville product and longtime leader of the Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats wrapped up her post-secondary career with a notable nod to her work outside the rink.

Brooklyn Haubrich, a fifth-year forward for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, earned the Canada West Conference's 'Student-Athlete Community Service Award' this week, ahead of the Canada West finals.

Haubrich is no stranger to a leadership role on her team. She served as an alternate captain with the Wildcats in 2012-13, before back-to-back seasons with the 'C' from 2013-15.

Then, trading in the blue and white of the Wildcats for the green and white of the Huskies, Haubrich again was a three-year captain, serving as an alternate in her third campaign before being named team captain in her final pair of seasons.

In the award announcement on the Canada West website, Haubrich was noted as giving back 'through a variety of community initiatives, including coaching youth hockey and providing opportunities to female hockey players across rural Saskatchewan'.

"She’s our leader on the team and she’s a leader among all of the athletes here with Huskie Athletics," said Huskies' head coach Steve Kook in the announcement as well.

"This is a very fitting honour for her, it’s just who she is as a person and not necessarily what she does as an athlete. Brooklyn is from a rural background and believes very strongly in giving back to the game and that’s why she does all the volunteering she does with the youth both here in Saskatoon and in rural areas throughout Saskatchewan."

Haubrich posted 71 total points in 130 SFMAAAHL regular-season and playoff games with the Wildcats over four years. She then added 39 at the U Sports level with the Huskies, doing so in 138 appearances.
