The Commissioner of the Western Hockey League was in Swift Current Monday to honour a longtime member of the Broncos board of directors.

Ron Robison presented Ben Wiebe with the WHL Governors Award.

Robison said during Wiebe's 17 years as Broncos governor he contributed much to the league.

"Ben at the league level was really a solid guy to have there because he wouldn't get caught up with what was happening in the game it was more how is our business and how is the health of our financial position and strategic plans. From that standpoint he was invaluable, as a leader, as our finance cheer for many years and as a member of the executive committee."

"The governors overall appreciate the challenges that are here in Swift Current and other smaller markets. Ben was at the forefront of that in terms of making sure we had a model that worked for everybody."

Wiebe has been a part of the Broncos board of directors since the team came back from Lethbridge in 1986. He stepped down as governor in the fall and was replaced by Al Stewart.
