The City of Swift Current is hosting its first Household Hazardous Waste Day of 2024, aligning with spring cleaning habits.

Residential hazardous waste is collected and recycled in a free and easy manner for residents today -- drive out to the southeast parking lot of the InnovationPlex and stay in your vehicle while staff unload the materials.

Keegan Story, manager of environmental services for the City, pointed individuals to their website for a full list of products and waste they will accept.

"It's an event that we are currently holding twice a year as an initiative to keep harmful chemicals and products out of our landfill, out of the environment," he said. "And to give our local residents an opportunity to clean up some of the clutter and get rid of those chemicals that they've been holding on to."

The event runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, with the next Household Hazardous Waste Day falling on Oct. 9, during the same timeframe.

"We do ask though, if it's not in its original packaging, if you've stored some oil in the margarine container, that you write on the container what it is or make sure that you know what it is when you bring it in, so that we can help put it in the proper category," added Story.
