Drag racing got off to a windy start this weekend, but was a fast-lane success nonetheless.

Saturday and Sunday both saw over 50 cars attend the Swift Current Airport opening weekend for the Swift Current Drag Racing Association.

SCDRA President, Bob Schafer, was thrilled to see so many people braving the iffy forecast to travel all the way to the track from across the prairies.

"It was just a great weekend," said Schafer. "(Saturday), I think we would have had a lot more cars if the wind was not quite so strong and the weather wasn't so scary looking. I think it held back a bunch of cars."

The brave and the bold that did bring their chariots to race managed to have a good two days of racing.

Day One was recapped with some big wins, and some locals doing pretty well, including Schafer himself.

Schafer unfortunately ended up running into technical difficulties with his car, forcing him to sit out Sunday's races.

Another member of the SCDRA who was getting down the track as fast as he could manage was Brian Westerhaug, vice president of the SCDRA. This year, Westerhaug was also the sponsor for the entry bracelets at the gate, showing his love of the art of drag racing extends to making sure others are able to get in to watch.

"It's worth getting people out here through the gate just because it is a fun time," said Westerhaug. "The community here is very friendly and very welcoming."

While Brian was running his car as best he could, he also seemed to be suffering from a bit of the race day blues, perhaps marking the SCDRA staff as a little unlucky.

Either way, Sunday's results show another strong local contingent burning rubber.
