The long-awaited return of Swift Current's cherished summer farmer's market is finally here.

Market Square begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for a budding season of Saturdays filled with fresh produce, handmade trinkets and baked goods.

Kirsten Patzer is the new event manager for the weekly markets, filling in the shoes of Marlene Johnson who retired from a long career with the City of Swift Current earlier this year.

"My husband Justin and I run Grasslands Events, which is a local events business, so when the City was looking for a new event coordinator for Market Square, we put our name in the ring and here we are," she said.

Not much will change under new management, other than the events starting 30 minutes earlier than previous years and a slight shift in layout.

Patzer assured that some beloved vendors will be returning this year, but there will also be some new faces and goods that community members will want to check out.

"You'll want to come down and see them," she teased. "We still have lots of room for more vendors. So, if you want to apply, you can still apply on the City's website."

An annual fundraiser for The Center will be featured at the first installment of Market Square tomorrow. Local EMS, RCMP and Firefighters will be competing in the Chili Cookoff to be crowned best dish by the community, with all funds raised going to the youth initiative. The frontline workers will be handing out bowls and accepting votes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
