The Swift Current 57's dropped an 8-7 decision to the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Athletic Park on Friday.

The Mavs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks in part to a grand slam by Nick Thibodeau. Marcus Graham hit a two-run single to make it 6-2 in the third inning and Jose Ayala scored on a passed ball to cut the 57's deficit to 6-3 in the fifth. Micah Dvorak scored on a passed ball in the sixth and Thibodeau added a solo shot in the seventh to put the Mavericks up 8-3, but the 57's would mount a rally in the ninth inning. Reliever Jon Shields walked the first four batters he faced to bring home Cullen Verville, and after Evan Gant took over on the mound, Ayala hit a two-run double and Gabriel Maldonado was forced home on a bases-loaded walk to make the score 8-7, but the rally would end as Gant struck out Demetrio Archuleta and Verville to end the game.

Klevert Martina allowed six earned runs and eight hits, and threw eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings in the loss. Mavericks starter Braedon Davis struck out five over four innings in the win, and Gant picked up the save.

The 57's (4-14) start a two-game weekend set with the Edmonton Prospects Saturday at 7:05 p.m. from Mitchell Field.
