Swift Current's Tombstone Whiskey has thrust itself into America's Top Hitmaker competition vying for a once-in-a-lifetime prize package.

The local band is currently leading its group in voting, which began on Canada Day. If they can emerge victorious from multiple rounds of voting they'll be featured in Rolling Stone, win $10,000, enter into a mentorship program, and perform at Rolling Stone's Future of Music showcase in Texas.

Darrin Schwartz, frontman for Tombstone Whiskey, said he entered them into the contest "a while ago" and called it a longshot for them to be accepted into America's Top Hitmaker.

"They select who continues on into the competition and we got selected," he said. "As soon as we found out we were super stoked that they picked us (to compete) out of 100 some bands probably."

The first round of voting is open until June 11 at 7 p.m. Pacific Time, with the first cut being made after that. Voters can cast their ballots every 24 hours and for additional votes, individuals can donate. If the band moves on to the next round, voting for it will start immediately and that process will continue until they reach their finalists.

"We do this for you and we appreciate everything you guys have done to support us in the past and in the future," he said. "Keep pressing on because it's amazing."

Tombstone Whiskey will also be taking to Facebook live Friday night to debut some new music they're working on and planning to use for a new album.
